Applicon has been awarded a supply contract for the delivery of new mobile rugged communications platforms. In the form of a modular trailer, the totally self contained platform will support several important communications systems employed at Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Western Australian mining operations.

“These new platforms are an important part of our SMART product line up” according to Alan Smith, co-founder and director of Applicon.

“We see this new design as a great base for communications and technical systems wherever they need to be deployed. In Rio Tinto’s case, we are delivering a trailer version because they prefer to relocate with light vehicles.

“Mechanically, we have created a basic equipment module that can also be lifted with a crane or Hiab and we have included self-contained guying system and stabilisers so the payload mast can remain deployed in high wind conditions.

“Technology-wise, we have included solar power as the primary source, with diesel backup, all controlled via a smart device which can monitor and report the status and performance of both the trailer itself and the payload devices on board.

“We see all kinds all of applications for our platform to carry new communications equipment and systems used in modern mining, resources and construction environments.”

Having received a contract for the design and supply of 9 trailer-based systems to Rio Tinto Iron ore, and with previous contracts supplying similar equipment to the coal mining industry, Applicon is looking forward to the continuing development of this emerging technology platform.

More information on the SMART Trailer technology can be found in the Product Note.
